Reinventing the Office of the President of Mexico
(MEI 897, Houston, May 29, 2019) This report addresses two broad questions: During the first six months of the López Obrador administration, how has the national interest been served? In parallel, is the Mexico risk premium overpriced or underpriced in the energy sector? Table 1 lists 13 unforced errors, that is, errors that were not forced on the president by opponents or circumstances. We observe that there is an opportunity cost in the president’s dedicating 10 or more hours a week to press briefings: the time is taken away from other presidential responsibilities, such as visiting foreign leaders and holding the national flag high in international gatherings.
