The Uber rage

MEI REPORT 077 (Houston) — This report summarizes the findings of a dozen informal interviews with taxi drivers in Mexico City regarding their views about the introduction of the taxi service Uber.

Its introduction is interpreted as an instance of creative destruction, a concept in economics popularized by Joseph Schumpeter in the 1950s. The complaints of the taxi drivers are noted, as are the pluses and minuses of the service. The discussion pivots to the energy sector, where it is seen that in the 2013-14 Energy Reform, creative destruction is not embraced; instead, government agencies are to be given attributes to permit incremental improvement. Several opportunities for creative destruction are suggested.
